Proposed Daily Excursions at Kythira suggested by one of our visitors.
North: In the morning visit Karava and the area “Portokalia / Amir Ali springs”, have a coffee at the nearby café and then follow the road to Platy Ammos until you find the sign towards Fournoi Beach. In the afternoon visit the amazing Palaiochora (the old city in the middle of a canyon, destroyed by the Pirate Barbarossa) and then go for a walk to Potamos village and have dinner at Panaretos or a coffee/drink at Astikon Café.
East: In the morning go to the village Avlemonas and swim (with underwater mask) at the small caves. Then leave for the beach Kaladi, where (if it is after 2-3) you will find natural shade from the rocks. End the day by having a great meal at Skandeia Restaurant. Alternatively, you can swim in the best sandy beach of the island, the golden sandy beach of Diakofti and then enjoy your meal at Zefyros restaurant.
Center/West: Begin by walking around the Venetian village of Kato Chora of Mylopotamos. Drive to the Cave of Saint Sofia and take the tour (takes about 30 minutes). Then go to Limnionas for a swim, driving through a beautiful landscape. Return to Mylopotamos for a walk, eat at “Platanos” in the central square and walk to the nearby area “Neraida” to watch the waterfall, swimin the small lakel (it will take off the salt from the sea and make you feel 10 years younger) and walk along the brook as long as you can (amazing scenery, 22 old watermills and silence). Close the day with a drive to the Monastery of Panagia Myrtidiotisa and watching a beautiful sunset.
South: The day will begin with a walk around Chora and a visit to the Castle. Then drive to a couple of the nearby beaches (Melidoni, Chalkos, Furi Ammos, Komponada) or take the tour to the island Hytra, which is said to be one of Kythira highlights (we didn’t do it due to weather). End the day with dinner at Filio and at Koukos bar between Chora and Kapsali.
